To overview the start of my skin care routine, we have to look back when i was a teenager, my mother bought me some high-end skin care products at the age of 16 with the brand YSL (Yves Saint Laurent – a Luxury Fashion Brand). I tried using an easy 3 step –Cleanser + Toner + Moisturizing Cream for around 2 months, then sadly my skin got bad allergy after using YSL for 2 months.
Pieces of skin on face were peeling off, the whole face was extremely dry with allergy red dots all over my face :(… when i think back now some reasons might be weather changed, teenage hormones or using extreme “hot” water to clean faces. (personal preference)
My solution was to go see a doctor and then i was asked to use Hydrocortisone 0.5% and 1.0% cream as a face cream. For your information, Hydrocortisone cream can clam the inflammation that occurs during certain skin conditions or reactions. Hydrocortisone cream may be used for treating various skin conditions including: eczema. That was the time when i stopped using any skin care products.
Another 4-5 years went by, i started using the three steps Cleanser + Toner + Moisturizing Cream with the brand Clinique (Clinique Laboratories, LLC is an American manufacturer of skincare) and i got allergy again my gosh… Especially the toner and the soap that killed my skin to became a Hydrocortisone creamer again.
Not until 23-25 years of age, then my skin started to act “normal” again, and that was the time i started my own skincare routine with Cleanser + Serum + Moisturizing Cream only. The first serum i fell in love with was Estee Lauder Anti-aging serum (Advanced Night Repair) – they are really really good and i used it for many years. Later i found out that their main ingredient was stem cell but the percentage is very low. After Estee Lauder, I tried so many other brands includes but not limited to Yves Saint Laurent, Clinique, Max Factor, Lancome, Maybelline, Loreal, Laura Mercier, Shu Uemura, Shisedo, NARS, MAC, Bobbi Brown, Chanel, L’Occitane, Biotherm, Fancl, SK-II, The Body Shop, H2O+, La Mer, Victoria’s Secret, Origins, Philosophy (Hope in a jar), Kiehl’s, Nu Skin, etc. On the side of all those brand, Hydrocortisone was still my best friend until later 20’s.
The whole allergy stopped around my 30’s and i started exploring the goods on using a regular skin care routine. One important point i forgot to mention – i never care about the ingredient and that was the big reason why for my bad allergy… so please pay attention to the ingredient list.
So if you are a newbies, start with something simple – as simple as possible, toner is something to balance your skin so that i can absorb the cream better but you can always skip any process at the beginning. Here are some suggestion:
- Cleanser + Moisturizing Cream
- Cleanser + Toner + Moisturizing Cream
- Cleanser + Serum + Moisturizing Cream
- Cleanser + Lotion + Moisturizing Cream
In conclusion, i think changing brands from time to time is a good way to start – just like eating different kinds of food everyday to ensure your body absorb goods on each type.
Here are some brand suggestion for those who are between 20-30:
- InnisFree Green Tea series
- Nature Republic Aloe series
- Grinif Rose Water
- Grinif Tea Tree Series
- Grinif Serum (Ampolue)
- Cleomee Donkey Milk (only cream and cleaner are available on this one but the ingredient is so mild and natural that i personally love using it)
I personally like Grinif a lot because the factory mentioned to me that their products will expire in a shorter period of time meaning ingredients they used are more “natural” than others.
